The first Northfleet Carnival was held in 1967 and was organised by a group of volunteers who had the idea that a carnival for the people of Northfleet and involving the people of Northfleet would be a good community event. The first Saturday in July was chosen as carnival day and has remained the day of the carnival ever since. Local organisations, local businesses and any other interested bodies were invited to form a procession of decorated floats and walking contingents and the route wound its way around the streets of Northfleet finishing up at Wombwell Park where local charities had been invited to set up stalls and sideshows to raise money for their charity. The
route of the procession was changed in the mid 1970’s to include Gravesend
town centre and was changed again in 2007 when we joined forces with the
"Big Day Out" . Indeed the route has
changed many times over the years but 3 things now remain fixed. a) We start the Carnival in Northfleet b) We include Perry Street and Gravesend town centre in the route c) We finish at The Prom At the Prom you will find the boating lake, around which local charities can have stalls to raise much needed funds for themselves, a small charge is made for the pitch. This year the "Big Day Out" and the "Gravesend Regatta" is on hand to keep you entertained. |
